The most difficult parts of my journey as a software engineer haven’t been reaching the typical career milestones (first line of code, first engineering job, first leadership position), they’ve been the “what’s now?” moments that follow. This talk delves into those less defined areas of engineering growth, where the traditional career ladder can’t (or won’t) help you. We’ll start with some foundational principles to growth, which are often overlooked by the typical results based approaches often seen in tutorials or guides; discuss common challenges and some practical solutions that you can use to move through them; and finally how to combine those principles and practices to pursue a career long journey of growth.

Prerequisites

This talk is general purpose, and should be applicable to anyone who is in the software engineering field, or is interested in joining it.

Take Aways

  • How to maximizing the growth opportunities in your current environment
  • Practical ways to move through “what next moments” like career plateaus or burnout
  • Using a growth-focused perspective to navigate the career ladder
